Once the court rules in a custody hearing, can that ruling ever be changed?
If one parent is out of state and misses the hearing for custody can he at some later time file to get joint custody back?

Usually there is a 2 or 3 year wait before you can ask for a change to the order unless there is a compelling change in circumstance. Even after the waiting period, you will have to prove that there is a change in circumstance, and that the change in custody will be in the child's best interests.

If you were not properly served because you were out of town, talk to an attorney about appealing the decision.
