I live in Las Vegas and Im trying to find a job in a casino. I got caught shoplifting a pair of earrings. THe cop had me fill out some paperwork, then I received a letter in the mail asking to pay for a fine.... I never really went to court and got convicted. I just dont know if this will show on my background check. How do I check my background at the same levels that employers check? If it's not on my record, can they deny hiring me because I mentioned this incident? I want it to mention it in the application in case they find it but, because it wasn't really a conviction, what if they dont even find it.... would I be affected jus for mentioning it?
Please help!

Thank you for your help Jacksal! One more question, if I did the check and nothing came on my record-( because I never really went to court for it, so I think I can't get convicted if I dont go to court, is that right?) if I mentioned it in my application, can that affect me? even if they didn't find a conviction?

I do not know the terms of the fine you paid. Therefore I cant really say. spend the 40 bucks get the background check or better yet call the local court or Police agency in county of incident

All background checks are not created equal. What information an employer will see on a background check depends entirely on what information is requested. There is no standard check that all employers see, regardless; they can be as simple as checking the dates of employment with past employers or as complex as a full FBI search or anything in between.
