New Jersey...I was in my home when two NJ State Police Detectives rang my doorbell. They told me that they wanted to know where my wife was. I asked them why, and they would not tell me. I told them that I didn't know where she was. Then they asked me for her cell phone number. I told them I didn't remember it. Then they asked me what kind of car she drove. I told them I didn't know. They threatened to arrest me for obstructing justice, but they backed off when they received an unrelated radio transmission.

Would they have had pc to arrest me? I know that I can't give them a phoney name or purposely lead them somewhere away from my wife. But was I legally allowed to play dumb? Can I just say "I don't know" to every question? And can I just straight out refuse to answer them? When would my actions constitute obstruction?

Lying can be considered an obstruction of justice. You don't have to answer the questions at all. You can simply decline to answer.
