Is there a statute of limitations in the state of Virginia for paying criminal restitutions? I was involved in a shoplifting incident while in college back in 2001. The charges were subsequently dismissed after I completed my community service and paid my court fines. The judge did not want me to have a record since I had no prior charges etc. This week, I received a letter from an attorney representing the store stating I owe them money for the restitution from that incident. It has been 7 years and they are just NOW contacting me again. I last heard from them in the summer of 2001, and I am almost 99% certain I paid everything then, restitutions & court fines, I am going back and having my old bank statements/check copies pulled to prove it. But in the event I didn't pay it all, can they come back 7 years later trying to claim?? They claim my case just came up for "review". I'm not sure if I believe that because most people stay on a debt to collect! I know there is a certain time period to collect debts (credit cards etc), but I am unsure if this would apply to restitutions. Thanks for any help!!!
