Can I rent a house and keep the proceeds and let the estate pay the mortgage?

House was in both our names, husband/wife w/ rights of survivorship. Mortgage was late husband's name. I am the executrix of the estate---and house is now in my name alone.
Estate is still open and will be for a while (maybe up to a year).... am I able to rent the house and keep the proceeds (or use it to repair/upgade the house) and still continue to pay the mortgage from the estate? Is this legal?

I'm not a lawyer, but my mom died, and my sister and I left her house vacant for months, when we found out close to the time probate ended that I could have lived in it and my sister could have collected rent. This was mentioned by our attorney. Wish we would have asked. I'm not sure if you have to keep the income you make from the property in the estate fund, or if you can use it. It seemed like anything we sold, or collected money from needed to be set aside until probate was complete.
