This is new to me, so bear with me.

I work in the video post industry. Recently, I was fired from my job and charged with petty larceny. I made 30 copies of a DVD, (non copyrighted material), as a favor for a friend. I went to deliver the DVDs to the person when I was caught by management.

I was fired. Told that the company would charge theft charges against me. A week later, a police detective calls me. Ask me about the incident at work. I told it was stupid, I was doing a favor for a friend. He asks me to come in next week to be processed.

What are my options in this situation? Can I fight this?

In your post, you admit stealing: "I made 30 copies of a DVD, (non copyrighted material), as a favor for a friend."

What, if anything, is your defense?

I don't really think I have one. I know that other employees have used company stock for personal projects, including members of management. I have no real defense, I realize that. I think what I desire is to minimize the damage of this inicident?

Do I need to hire a lawyer for this situation?

For the criminal case, you need to hire a lawyer.
